Oregon Pay Equity Bill
Oregon's new pay equity bill went into effect this month and could potentially create a large liability for employers who are not compliant. The new bill will allow employees claiming pay inequity to file a complaint for unpaid wages with Oregon BOLI or the Oregon Circuit Court on behalf of themselves and other employees in a similar situation. Employees could be awarded up to two years back pay, along with punitive damages and attorney fees. The new law also prohibits employers from requesting salary history from job applicants prior to making a job offer with compensation amount.
Portland Business Journal outlines the highlights of the bill, when different portions take effect, and what employers can do now to stay compliant.
